FWSD: Flaunt Fashion Series

Hi friends,

Fashion Week San Diego (FWSD) held their first of the Flaunt Fashion Series, featuring Designer MarAlonzo. Lola and I attended the event last week, at the W Hotel San Diego. There was a Catwalk Show, guests were greeted with a hosted signature cocktail, and there was music, mingling and networking. I took some pictures and share them below. You can also view more pictures on FWSD’s Facebook page.

FWSD’s next event is their First Annual Spring Showcase,  on Saturday, April 26, at Harrah’s Resort Southern California. More details regarding that event can be found at FWSD’s website.

Hope you like the pictures from the Flaunt Fashion Series!

Hugs,

Paola

Blue Camouflage Dress

Hi friends,

Wrap dresses are very practical! I am a huge fan of them! Huge! Most of my work dresses are wrap dresses. My favorite brand is BCBG. I buy them at the BCGB stores, at the BCBG Outlet stores, Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack, and Macy’s. I also have a few other brands, such as Banana Republic and Ann Taylor. Saks and Saks Off 5th  also carry multiple other brands (at reasonable prices). I like them for multiple reasons:

1- They are timeless

2- They are easy to wash, I wash them at home in the gentle cycle with Woolite and lay them flat to dry

3- The material does not fade easily (so they last for a long time)

4- The work well for my curvy body type because they emphasize the waistline (they actually work for all body types)

5- They are made of stretchy material and the waistline is adjustable, so they work for me, if I gain 5 pounds or lose 5 pounds, I just loosen or tighten the waistline straps!

6- They can be worn year-round – alone or with a cardigan, jacket, or pashmina/scarf, with boots, sandals, tights or alone.

7- They can be dressed up or down – with dressy or casual accessories, heels or flats. So, I can wear them for work, to accompany my husband to business dinners, cocktail parties, and casual occasions.

8- They are practical for travel. They aren’t bulky and don’t take much space in the luggage. They don’t wrinkle easily.

So, I have many dresses in this style and love them!

This one I call the “Blue Camouflage” dress. I wore it to host an interview once and one of the engineers at the television station told me it looked like blue camouflage. And bam, the dress got it’s name, haha!

This dress is wonderful because I can wear it year-round. The blue on the waistline emphasizes my waistline and of course, black is always flattering. It is a fun dress to wear – and the print is not too busy for television, so it also works for the shoots I have at work.

I wore it recently to attend the Grand Opening of El Agave Restaurant in Del Mar.   It is comfortable, I wore it all day for work (with a different par of shoes and a business jacket), then to take these Outfit of the Day pictures (changed shoes), and to the event. It was a long day – and thankfully, I was comfortable all day long! Hope you like the look!

Do you have any wrap around dresses? Which is your favorite? Do you have a favorite brand? I’d love to hear from you.

Hugs,

Paola

Easy Way to Change Up Your Look

Hi friends,

Being a woman can be fun and has many positives! I love being a woman, for many reasons – on a kind of superficial side, I like that we can change up our look quite easily with make-up and hair! In general, men only have clothes to change up their look, maybe they could grow their hair longer or grow a mustache or beard. But us women, we can color our hair, cut it, wear it up, wear it down. We can wear pants, skirts, dresses, jumpers, capris, shorts, skorts, you name it! And, we also have make-up to have fun with. What’s your mood today? Red lips or natural make-up? Maybe a smokey eye? Bronzed look? Bright pink lips or  nude lip? Why not add some falsies to our eyelashes for some extra fun? You get the idea. We, as women, have many options when it comes to our appearance and this can be fun!

Even though I fix my hair in different styles, up, down, half up, french twist, up-do in a bun, ponytail, etc…when I wear my hair down I always part it on the same side. I have a picture from about 15 years ago where I am wearing my hair straight and parted in the middle. It was taken at a night club, with my sister and older brother, and some friends, so the picture has some sentimental value. When I look at it, I also ask myself, why don’t I wear my hair like that someday just to change up my look. So, last week, I decided to part my hair in the middle. I wore it parted in the middle for work and to go to a party. Even with an up-do, I parted my bangs in the middle. Many people noticed a difference, they couldn’t quite tell what it was though. I mostly got positive feedback and remarks on my face looking different, some comments about my eyes looking larger, some said it was a glow (even though my make-up was the same). The producer I work with the most often did compliment me on my hair specifically, so he noticed the change was in the hair, but he asked me if I had lightened it. My sister was the only one that noticed it was the hair being parted in the middle. Not even Lola noticed, until I pointed it out. Of course, my hubby did not notice it, but he usually does not notice things like this. I think I would have to make a drastic change to my hair for him to notice a change. He says I always look nice, and he does notice and compliment me when I wear “extra nice”outfits (on days even I know I made an extra effort).

I did feel different. I would observe my features in the mirror and noticed how it made them look different. Funny what a part in our hair can do.

So, next time you want to change up your look a little. Part your hair to the opposite side or in the middle. It is amazing what a simple change like this can do.

How do you part your hair? Do you usually always part it to the same side or in the middle? Do you generally wear your hair up or down? How much time do you spend fixing your hair everyday? I’d love to hear from you!

Wishing you “good hair” days, my friends!

Hugs,

Paola

Tricks to Motivate Myself to Exercise: #7

Hi friends,

Finding the motivation to exercise, will help us get active and hopefully keep us healthy – and help us maintain our weight. The main reason I exercise if for well-being (for health, happiness, & to de-stress) and the second to maintain my weight. It is not always easy to motivate myself to exercise, so I’ve been sharing the tricks I use. Here’s trick #7 – Exercise on weekends. Hope you find it motivating!

Do you exercise on weekends? When do you prefer to exercise? Do you have any tricks you’d like to share? I’d love to hear from you.

Hugs,

Paola

Tricks to Motivate Myself to Exercise #7: Exercise on Weekends

Generally, on weekends we have more free time, that is if you work a Monday through Friday schedule, like I do. So, weekends are a good time to get in some exercise! If you like sports, you can play tennis, basketball, go surfing, swimming, or any sport that gets you out there being active and breaking a sweat. My hubby and I were playing racquetball for a few months and it is a great workout, plus it’s fun! You can also go for a bike ride or get out there to throw a ball with your children or friends. If you jog, on the weekends you can jog as far as you want! I prefer to walk and on weekends, I can take more scenic walks and not be as concerned about how long the walk will take.  Or, you could also go for a walk on a beach or a hiking trail. Or, if you have a membership to a gym, you can take a class. I like to go to Zumba classes on weekends, usually in the mid-mornings. Many people like to take a yoga class on weekends, to help them stretch and de-stress from the workweek.

If your children play a sport on the weekend, you could try to go for a walk around the field before or after the game. I used to do that when my hubby was helping coach my nieces’s soccer team. I’d out on my Ipod and walk around the field a few times, then watch her play.  If you have little one’s, you could go for a walk and push them on a stroller. I’ve done that with my nephews and they enjoy getting out of the house and seeing the scenery, plus we all get some fresh air. If the weather is too warm or cold, you can exercise to a DVD. I’ve done that with my sister and we have fun dancing to a Zumba DVD!

I know, on weekends we want to disconnect and relax, but if you exercise, even just a little bit, you will feel better and sleep better! Remember, if you can, try to carve out a little time for yourself to stay active and healthy!

Hugs,

Paola

A Beautiful Stroll at Balboa Park

Hi friends,

There are many ways to stay active! One of my favorite ways is to walk. I prefer walks outside. I find them relaxing and a great way to clear my mind, to get some fresh air and de-stress. The walks I enjoy the most are with friends! Lola is my exercise buddy and we try to go for speed walks at least one to three times per week. I have written about these walks before. We have fun every time, we catch up on our lives, chat about a million topics, we call it our “therapy time,” and for me it has become “me” time.  Most of the time we walk by the bay downtown and Little Italy, where Lola lives. Downtown is close to my office and easy to drive to after work, then I head home afterwards.

We like to periodically mix it up and walk at other locations. Balboa Park is one of our favorite places to walk at. It also happens to be close to downtown and there is ample free parking, which is a plus. Balboa Park is a beautiful public park with many museums, art studios, restaurants, event venues, fountains, and attractions. It is very green with lots of plants! It makes for a scenic walk and there is always interesting people walking. It is a tourist attraction, but also a popular for locals. There are beautiful venues and buildings where brides and quinceañeras take pictures.

Last Friday, Lola and I decided to go for a walk at Balboa Park. The weather was nice and warm, it was the perfect way to unwind from a long week at work, and also get some fresh air while we got in some exercise! We walked for a little more than one hour. In case you are wondering, here’s our route: we  parked in the Federal Lot located at Park Boulevard and Presidents Way (behind the San Diego Hall of Champions Sports Museum), walked northeast on the sidewalk along the Organ Pavilion parking lot, walked into the Spreckels Organ Pavilion, continued north towards the San Diego Museum of Art, walked past the fountain heading east towards the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, walked around the fountain heading north past the San Diego National History Museum, turned west towards the San Diego Zoo, turned south and walked through the Spanish Village Art Studio, headed south past the San Diego National History Museum, walked into the Zoro Garden, headed west back towards the San Diego Museum of Art, then south towards the San Diego Aerospace Museum, walked all the way to the Museum, turned around and walked north past the Starlight Bowl, turned right at the Hall of Champions towards the Federal parking lot. We ended the walk with a cool down walk around the parking lot & some stretches….we kept chatting the entire time, ha!

So, next time you have an opportunity, visit Balboa Park or a park near you – enjoy the scenery and get active! Stretch your legs and get some fresh air!

Here are some pictures from our walk, hope you like them!

Do you visit parks in your area? Which park is your favorite? Do you go for walks, if yes, where? Have you been to Balboa Park?

Hugs,

Paola

Making Healthy Options: Take-Out Chinese Food

 Hi friends,

Food – it has been around since the beginning of man! We love it and enjoy it, but we don’t always enjoy gaining weight from it! At least, I don’t. Who agrees? Well, since I have been married maintaining my weight has been even more challenging. My husband likes to eat out often and he doesn’t like to eat the same thing two days in a row or eating left overs. I can eat the same thing everyday and be ok with it. I am a pretty simple eater and as long as I have healthy options around, that is what I will eat. Even with snacks, if I am craving something sweet and have some frozen mango in the freezer, I’ll eat that and bam, my craving is gone nan junk food, ha!

It is challenging for me to make healthy choices when we eat out! It takes will power! When I am sitting there, looking through the menu, going straight to the salads, then my eyes wander to the fries or onion rings! Yikes!

We order take out Chinese food about two times a month. It is hard to not go for the sweet and sour chicken, or the fried rice! And, who doesn’t love fried egg rolls? I love these! Yum! But, I am really trying to keep it healthy and low on calories, so lately I’ve been opting for steamed vegetables and brown rice. It is a healthier option. Just be cautious of heavy sauces that may be added to the vegetables. This way, when my husband is enjoying his mongolian beef, fried rice, and other heavier options from the menu….I am still enjoying the Chinese food experience, just the low calorie and less fat, and low sodium version. I still can’t resist the egg rolls and usually have one! But, eating one is better than eating three egg rolls, and this way I don’t feel deprived.

Instead of a soft drink or sweetened iced tea, I’ll drink water or a sparkling water, or green tea. For utensils, I’ll use chop sticks, we have some plastic one’s at home and it really adds to the experience of eating Chinese food (at least for me). It takes me longer to eat with chop sticks, so my brain gets the signal that my stomach is full before I end up overeating. Another trick I use, is that I serve myself on a medium size plate, not the large dinner plate, hence eating a smaller portion overall. After I serve the portion I plan to eat, I put away the leftovers right away….saving them for lunch the next day. If I leave the containers out, it is just too easy to go back to the kitchen counter and serve myself some more!

Ah, I know, the tricks we use to maintain our weight. I never deprive myself of any type of food…especially not chocolate or foods I love, ha! I just try to eat in moderation and keep it healthy as often as possible. I figure, it all balances out.

Remember, the most important thing is that you are happy with your life and yourself, at any size we may be….to enjoy life and that includes the joy of food!

Do you have any suggestions of healthy take-out dinners you buy? Do you use any techniques or tricks to eat smaller portions or healthier meals? I’d love to hear them!

Hugs,

Paola

Break The Weeknight Routine = A Fun Evening at El Agave

DSCN9139Hi friends  – hope your week is going well! Mine is flying by!

It seems that nowadays we all do more than we did before, more at work and at home. My workdays can be long, filled with meetings, calls, shoots, & deadlines. I love it, but at the end of my workday, sometimes I just want some silence & a relaxing evening at home. Now that I am married, I have cut down on the number of work related evening events I attend. I made this change, mostly because I like to spend time with my hubby, to exercise after work, and so I can spend time on my blog 🙂

It is easy to fall into a routine on weeknights. We have all done it at some point. I did it even when I was single. There is nothing wrong with having a routine, trust me, I am a creature of habit and can be quite methodical in the way I go through my day (I’ll leave that for another post). But, every once in a while, it is nice to change up the routine. I try to limit my weeknight outings to once per week (personal or work related events), not counting Friday. Once a week, I will either go for a walk with Lola by the bay downtown or she’ll join me to attend an event.

A few years ago, I met a sassy Latina named Samya, uber talented and outspoken. We’ve stayed connected over the years. Last week, she sent me an invitation for the Grand Opening of El Agave Del Mar Restaurant. I did what I usually do, looked at the invitation & geographic location (I usually don’t attend events too far from downtown), reviewed my schedule, and put it with the other “tentative” invitations. But, it stayed on my mind. Then, I looked at the invitation more closely and realized it was from Samya. I RSVPd.

After the many laughs I had yesterday, I am glad I RSVPd! I go to multiple events and Lola is usually my plus 1. We always have a nice time, but yesterday was lots, lots of fun! Multiple things happened that made the night fun. First of all, even though this may not sound funny, it was and turned into an on-going joke throughout the evening. Lola had on some gorgeous Michael Kors heals she had purchased recently. She had told me about the shoes, so it was nice to finally see them on her! This was her first time wearing them. As I am complimenting her shoes, she tells me they are uncomfortable, to which I frown, but say, “oh no, but they are so beautiful!” Then she turns around and shows me a small cut the zipper has made on the back of her heel, yikes. Luckily, I had a band-aid in my purse, so that helped. Second, we were chatting so intensely in the car that I missed the freeway exit in Del Mar! We laughed and just took the next exit, we were chatting anyway, so no worries. Third, as we exit the elevator, a metal decoration on Lola’s shoe just breaks off! It broke from one side but was still attached to the other side, so it wasn’t even removable. She is a trooper and laughed it off as we entered the restaurant.

Samya greeted us nicely upon arrival! Always a pleasure to see her and catch up! We scan the room, say hi to a few people we knew. We got some food, found seats, and started to enjoy our margaritas, with the most amazing sunset in Del Mar! There was a very nice server that kept bringing Lola food and drinks! And well, since I was sitting with her, he’d also offer me some food, ha! The event was a huge success and the terrace was packed, no surprise since Samya organized it & she’s a public relations pro!

Then,  I saw my friend Luis getting food, I’ve known him for about 12 years! I said hi from afar and he came over to greet us! He told me he was sitting  at the bar with Nelly, also a friend, and we agreed we’d come over to the bar later on or they’d come to our table. Lola and I continued to enjoy our margaritas & conversation. Within a few minutes, Luis and Nelly came over to sit with us and the laughters did not end for the rest of the evening! Lola and Luis were sharing pics of their adorable doggies, we were all catching up, and joking. Samya came to sit with us towards the end of the evening. Between her and Nelly, it is hard to say which one is more sassy, they were both throwing out lines that were hilarious! Both are sweethearts and genuine people, love that about them!

I wanted to take a picture of the sunset and realized I had left my phone in the car, a huge no-no for me, but figured in case of an urgent matter my hubby knew I was with Lola and could call on her phone. I did have my camera. We asked a server to take a group pic of us, but bless his heart, every picture came out blurry (he took about 5 pics, I posted two below), we kept posing for the pics and were laughing each time we realized it was blurry…..finally, Luis took out his phone and that became the picture we  posted for the night. Somehow, Lola’s shoe malfunction got into the conversation and we all started comparing shoes. Luis was wearing converse style tennis shoes, with a business jacket, collared shirt, and gray pants. We thought that was just the look that he had been wearing all day. He frowned and told us he changed shoes in the car when they arrived at the event because, as he stated in a serious tone “you know, mens feet also get tired in work shoes and hurt after a long day,” hilarious! Again, we all burst into laughs!

We realized it was dark out and getting late, later than we had originally planned on staying. As the saying goes, time flies when you are having fun and it did indeed! We ended the night with a group pic, with Samya (shown above). We walked out together and decided to take a group shoe picture in the elevator, again we laughed! It was a memorable evening, I am certain it will come up in conversations with Lola in the future, when we laugh about her Michael Kors shoe malfunction and Luis’ comment about mens feet hurting after a long day in work shoes, too funny!

The El Agave Del Mar Restaurant is beautiful, the food is delicious and the drinks amazing, they use good quaility tequila in their margaritas, and don’t even get me started on the freshness of the guacamole, empanadas…and sopes! The view is breathtaking, wonderful place to see a sunset or enjoy the scenic ocean view!  Plus, as a Latina, I am always glad to see nice, classy restaurants that serve excellent Mexican cuisine!

I went out of my routine, my comfort level, and out of the downtown area….went to an event all the way in North County (ok, it’s not that far), and am SO glad I did because I had such a fun evening! So, next time you get an opportunity to do something fun on a weekday, try to pass on the comfort of just going home and getting in your jammies (I do this), instead go out! Break the routine, who knows what the night may bring, you may laugh and have a great time! Go out there and live life to the fullest, enjoy time with friends, a sunset, and have a margarita when you can!

Do you go to work related or personal/social events on weeknights? If yes, how often? When was the last time you had a surprisingly fun night at an event on a weeknight? I’d love to hear about it!

Hugs…TGIF it’s Friday mañana (means tomorrow;)),

Jazzing Up the Black Jacket

DSCN8951

Hi friends,

Black is one of my favorite colors to wear! It is easy to match an goes with practically everything…and, it’s slimming! Black never goes out of style, plus you can wear it year round. My closet includes at least one item in black for each category: shoes, sandals, boots, tennis shoes, belts, scarves, pashminas, gloves, hats, jewelry, and of course all types of clothing and undergarments! I have lots of black pants, skirts, and cardigan sweaters (I take one of them practically on every trip). The most common shoe color in my closet is black. My favorite jacket is a black leather one. So, you get the idea….I love wearing black!

The jacket I am wearing in this outfit is part of a suit, it comes with a black skirt. I decided to jazz it up by mixing it up with red tapered pants, a leopard belt, and a bold gold necklace! The red pants lighten up the outfit and add color to it! Since the jacket is 3/4 length, I wore heels to elongate my legs. I like how the red stitching on the jacket adds a special touch of uniqueness. I wore this outfit to work and a theater performance in the evening. It was so comfortable & fun to wear!

Hope you like the look!

Do you have black clothing & accessories? How do you match them? Do you have a favorite item in black in your closet?

Let’s stay connected – I post almost daily on Facebook:Paola Hernandez-Jiao: Latina Life And Style, hope to see you there as well! Leave your comments or let me know what other looks you’d like to see or topics you’d like me to cover.

Hugs,

A Mom’s Love: Plants vs Zombies Birthday Cake

DSCN9009

Hi friends,

Children’s birthday parties are always fun. It is amazing to see things through children’s eyes and how much fun they have at parties, it is continuous playing, laughs, and enjoyment.  It is nice to see how much effort the parents put into organizing these celebrations for their children. For the child and his parents, there is excitement leading to the party and lots of details to take care of, items to be purchased, decorations, cakes, food, drinks, prizes, and lots more. Finally, the birthday party date arrives and on the day of the party, you see the joy in the child’s face & the fun all the children have….and the other parents and guests as well.  The joy in your child’s face makes all the work you put into the party , and the stress, as well as exhaustion, worth it!

Even though my hubby and I are not parents yet, we go to lots of children’s birthday parties, aka piñatas for hispanic families. In addition to my nieces and nephews birthday parties, we go to our friends children’s parties. I also accompany my sister to a few parties each year and recently went to birthday party with a Plants vs. Zombies theme (in case you are wondering, just like I was, it is a popular video game).

When we arrived, the host was finishing the decorations on the birthday cake. She baked the cake from scratch and  decorated it with the Plants vs Zombies theme. Beforehand, she bought all the necessary items, including the decorations and food coloring spray. She claims she is not a good baker or cake decorator, but I disagree. This mom rocks, she is not only an amazing mom, she’s also a great cake decorator. The cake was not only beautiful, it was delicious, rich and moist! If i had not seen her decorating the cake, I would have thought it was made at a bakery.

It was so nice, that I asked her if I could post it on my blog & luckily she agreed.

What she used:

-Cake mix (marble and chocolate), items for cake: eggs, oil, water

-Hand blender

-Unflavored whipping cream

-Food color spray (in green color)

-Chocolate frosting

-Marshmallows (large white)

-Oreo cookies

-Candy gummy flowers (multiple colors)

-Lollipop sticks (to use as stems for gummy flowers)

-Candy in the form of small rocks

-Sugar sprinkles (in green color)

-Zombies vs Plants figurines

-Cake decorating icing bag (can be replaced with icing writing tubes)

-Large rectangular cardboard wrapped to use as base for cake (wrapped with green wax paper)

-Candles (of your choice she used gray candles to go with the theme)

Theme: Plants vs Zombies

DSCN9056 DSCN9042 DSCN9051

Steps:

1) Prepare the cake mix and bake the cakes – one marble sheet & one chocolate sheet, allow them to cool

DSCN8997

2) Mix Oreo cookies in a blender to make crumbs

3) Cut the marble cake in two layers, to make two thin layers

DSCN8968

4) On the wrapped cardboard that will be the base of the cake, build the layers, starting from the bottom with the marble cake, then a layer a chocolate cake, a layer of chocolate frosting, a layer of marshmallows, lastly add the thin layer of marble cake with the smooth surface facing up

DSCN8972

5) Use a blender to mix the whipping cream to the right consistency, separate a small bowl of whipping cream to use to write Happy Birthday on the cake

DSCN8970

6) Decorate the entire cake with the white whipping cream

DSCN8971 DSCN8992 DSCN8991

7) Spray the entire cake with the food color spray (you should do this in a well ventilated place because the aerosol gets in the air in the room and you way want to cover the surrounding areas with paper towels or newspaper because it will get on other surfaces, but it is easy to clean off)

DSCN8994 DSCN8995

8) Mark the area you will decorate as the garden – make the border with the rocks and use the Oreo cookies as the dirt

DSCN8999

9) Add the lollipop sticks to the gummy flowers, then place the flower gummy candy and a few Zombie figurines in the garden area

10) Add the remaining Zombies vs Plants figurines on the cake

 DSCN9001

11) Add a few drops of food coloring of your choice to some of the whipping cream, a few drops of black were used here to make gray whipping cream

12) Fill the cake decorating bag with the colored whipping cream, and write Happy Birthday and child’s name on the side of the cake with whipping cream

13) Place the candles on the cake

DSCN9009

13) Add the green sugar crystals as grass on the top surface of the cake and tilt a few of the Zombies so it looks like they are crawling

Approximate time: 2 hours

She also baked some unique & delicious cupcakes, I’ll post about those later this week.

Here’s how the final masterpiece was placed on the cake table, ready for guests to sing Happy Birthday to the birthday boy  & make for a perfect picture moment! Wonderful family memories!

The Vest Suit

DSCN8730

Hi friends,

Before I worked in the television industry, I worked at city hall and in politics. In those positions, I used to wear suits everyday. So, I have quite a few suits in my closet. In part, it was easier to wear a suit everyday because I just chose one from the closet and matched the blouse, shoes and necklace. It was a more conservative work environment and I dressed the part. Plus, back then I was younger than everyone in the room (by 10 – 20 years), so I thought suits made me look older and more professional.

Now, I work in the television industry and can be more creative with my outfits, and sometimes wear business casual attire. It’s fun, but sometimes it takes more time to select my outfit for the day, and decide what I will mix and match. I seldomly wear two piece suits, let alone three piece suits. I do wear my suit jackets, but match them with other skirts or pants. Since the weather has been chilly, I have been pulling out some of my suits. Luckily, they still fit, ha!

I pulled this three piece, brown pin stripe suit from the closet and decided to find a fun way to match it. I matched it with a bright green pin striped collared shirt from H&M. Years ago, I would wear it with a white or pink shirt, now I am experimenting more with bright colors and contrasts. I like the look and felt more dressed up than usual for work, yet stylish because of the bright green shirt and I only wore the vest throughout the day, not the jacket.

I matched it with green heels, these are beauties, and gold tone accessories. The hair style is an updo, to enhance the shirt collar 😉

So, if you buy suits, try to buy the best quality your wallet will permit and a basic style, trust me, you will be able to wear them for years. And, if you have suits in the closet you haven’t worn in a while, pull them out, and mix and match them with fun tops, belts and accessories….let your personal style shine through!

Hope you like the look!

Do you wear suits often? How do you mix and match your suits to make your personal style shine?

Hugs,

Paola

Find of the Week: Lancome Gift With Purchase

lacome1 2

Hi ladies (& men),

Lancome has a gift with purchase promotion this week, with the purchase of $39.50 or more, at Nordstrom stores!

I just happened to be at Westfield UTC this evening and went to Nordstrom to check the price of the night moisturizer. This evening, I ended my workday with a meeting in North County. I called my husband and we decided to meet at the mall. We had wanted to go to UTC together for a few weeks since he had given me a carry-on spinner as a Valentine’s gift. It was an impromptu visit that happened to work for both of us. It took him a while to get to UTC, so while I was waiting I stopped by Nordstrom and was pleasantly surprised to see Lancome had a gift with purchase promotion! Yay! Find of the Week!!

The Lancome day & night moisturizers I have been using the past month were travel size items from a gift with purchase I got recently at Macy’s. I have noticed a positive difference in my skin and decided to purchase the normal size night moisturizer. Luckily, Nordstrom had a promotion, so I purchased the moisturizer and also got the gift items included!

The night moisturizer I had been using was the Bienfait Multi-Vital Night, high potency night moisturizing cream, which is one of their lightest moisturizing creams (not necessarily anti-wrinkle). While at the counter, I inquired with the associate and she suggested I use the next level of night moisturizer, which was the line of day moisturizer I have been using.  The next level up is the High Resolution Night moisturizer, Refill-3X, triple action anti-wrinkle night cream, which I purchased. I have used Lancome moisturizers and serums in the past, but this is the first time I buy an anti-wrinkle cream. I am in my late 30’s and my skin is changing, which means I need to start using products that will help my skin remain moisturized and hopefully youthful looking 🙂 I started using the moisturizer tonight. At $98.00, it is not inexpensive, but a light layer of moisturizer goes a long way and makes my skin feel hydrated. I will use it and in a few weeks do a review, and let you know how it is working for my skin. At the end of the day (or years), I figure I will have this skin for the rest of my life and it isn’t getting any younger, so if I continue to moisturize it, maybe I can slow the aging process of my skin (or at least the appearance of it). I know, I can’t stop it, but maybe I can help the process by taking care of my skin. It is amazing what a good moisturizer, avoiding over exposure to the sun, and  using sunblock can do to help our skin look good!

Stay tuned, I’ll review the night moisturizing cream soon.

The Lancome gift with purchase promotion ends this Sunday, or until supplies last this week, so if you want to take advantage of getting these extra gifts, go to a Nordstrom store and purchase your favorite Lancome item. Also, you don’t have to have a Nordstrom card to purchase the promotion. You can pay with another credit card, debit card, check, or cash 😉 I was surprised to learn this today, at some department stores you have to use their credit card to take advantage of the “gift with purchase” promotions.

Do you use Lancome facial moisturizing creams or which brand do you use? Do you have a favorite day or night moisturizer you recommend? Do you use anti-wrinkle moisturizers? Share your favorites!

Hugs,

Paola

Getting Back to My Old Habits

DSCN7890

Hi friends,

Hope your week is getting off to a good start! As I have shared before, I have to work at staying at a healthy weight, always have and probably always will.  If I don’t exercise regularly, I can easily gain weight. In addition to exercise, I try to eat healthy foods and drink lots of water. I don’t deprive myself of anything, I eat in moderation, but do try to watch what I eat. Chocolate is one of my favorite treats and I don’t think I will ever give it up. A life without chocolate would just be less delicious, haha!

I have been married for a little more than three years and cook more often than I ever did when I was single. Actually, I rarely cooked when I was single and my fridge had limited items, most of which were healthy. I was and still am more of a snacker. I tend to eat small meals throughout the day. It is my system and it works for me. I rarely ate a full meal for dinner when I was single, I would have some crackers or a slice of bread with greek cheese, or maybe a few pieces of chocolate covered almonds, or a piece of fruit or some veggies, accompanied by a sparkling water. I know, sounds odd, but it was simple, tasty, healthy, and satisfied me. I rarely used the stove, let alone the oven – I would eat mostly fresh food and raw fruits or veggies.  Now that I am married, I have way more temptations in the fridge and pantry! Way more! I buy the groceries for our household and try to keep it healthy….but sometimes, my hubby will stop at a convenience store and buy chips or at a bakery and buy donuts or pastries. In addition to that, I  cook dinner for hubby a few times per week and sometimes I eat some of it. How can you not eat pasta or mashed potatoes? They are so delicious and the temptation is just too much when you are the one doing the cooking!

So, on a recent visit to Trader Joe’s ( I shop there every week), I bought edamame. I used to snack on them or have them as an entree for dinner. They are healthy, contain protein and lots of vitamins (plus at about $2 per bag, it is an inexpensive snack). This past weekend, when I got the urge to grab for a snack, I heated a bowl of edamame, sprinkled a little sea salt on them & voila’, a delicious snack! They are also tasty with a sprinkle of lime or lemon juice! I also find that because they have fiber, they make me feel satisfied for a longer period of time. In addition, I eat them from the pod, with my hands, so it takes me longer to eat them, hence my brain has time to register that I am eating and send a signal to my body that I am satisfied (full).

I am trying to get back to my old habit of not eating a full meal for dinner and instead snacking on healthy treats likes veggies & fruits!

Do you like endamame? How have your eating habits changed over the years? If you are single, do you eat a full meal at dinner time? If you are married, do you eat a full meal for dinner – or did you eat a full meal at dinner time when you were single?

Hugs,

Paola

The bag is not very large, enough for three to four servings and is sold frozen. I purchase the unsalted, soybean in a pod bag.

Life’s Everyday Joys: A Relaxing Sunday

coffee mugsf

Hi friends,

As much as I enjoy my active lifestyle and career, I also enjoy a relaxing Sunday at home. It is a day to re-charge and rest. Sometimes, I simply need it. It is one of life’s simple joys – the art of relaxing! If you are like me, you are productive all week….I’ve had to learn that it is ok to relax. To learn that relaxing, will help me re-charge.

My husband and I like to travel, and do it often, so I don’t get to enjoy weekends at home every week. A few weekends each month I’ll work, or we have commitments with friends and family. My weekdays are pretty full and long. Like many of you, I regularly work more than 40 hours each week, then try to exercise after work. About once a week, I’ll attend a work related function in the evening. So, by the time I get home and make dinner for my hubby, it is late. I try to spend some time on a blog post, do some things around the house, prep my outfit for the next day, take off my make-up, then it is time to go to sleep. That’s it, the day is over. Does this sound familiar?

So, when I can relax at home on a Sunday….all day long….I really, really enjoy it! I’ll sleep in a bit to catch up on my z’s, make some breakfast for my hubby, enjoy my cup of coffee in my pajamas while sitting with my husband as he has his breakfast. I’ll shower, put on some jeans, then watch TV or a movie, do some reading, catch up with friends or family over the phone, organize something at home, maybe do some laundry….and if I can, I’ll take a nap…and of course, write a blog post. Later in the day, I my have some tea and make an early dinner for my hubby, or he’ll go get some take-out (he’s so sweet). I’ll enjoy my hubby’s company & spending time at our home. Once a week, it is nice to not have to look at the clock or have any commitments.

Do you ever take a day off to just relax? What do you do on a relaxing day at home?

Hugs,

Paola

Chilly Spring Day

DSCN8790

Hi friends,

Sometimes, if I like an item, I will buy it in more than one color. Not all of the time, but occasionally, I will do this. For example, I have a few skinny jeans in the same design, just different colors…a few jackets, tank tops, shoes, skirts, even bracelets. I am trying to not do this anymore, but I don’t really think there is anything wrong with it. This jacket is a perfect example of this occasional shopping habit I have. I have it in red & camel color. It is so nice and warm, and comfortable to wear. I like that I can wear it open or closed, casual or dressed up. I have only worn this one twice. I wore the red jacket multiple times this past winter. I bough them on sale at Arden B in Westfield Horton Plaza.

Spring has begun, but we are still having a few chilly days in Southern California. I attended the Latino Film Festival a few days ago, and needed an outfit that would be comfortable to wear all day at the station, but could  transition to the festival, and would photograph well because I would be meeting viewers at the station’s exhibitor booth in the theatre.  I tend to get cold in movie theaters, so this jacket was the perfect item to wear! It is light enough for day, yet warm enough for night.

I matched it with black tuxedo skinny jeans, a black tank top, and gold accessories. The shoes jazzed up the outfit and added that little extra stylish touch to transition the look into night.

Hope you like the look!

Do you have any camel color jackets? Do you have shoes you wear to jazz up an outfit?

Hugs,

Paola

Cesar Chavez: An American Hero – Movie

1962852_224295514435891_355638946_n-1

Hi friends,

Every once in a while a movie comes along that can touch an entire community. The Cesar Chavez: An American Hero movie is one of them – a movie that the latino community is looking forward to seeing, particularly Mexican-Americans! It will open nationwide tomorrow, March 28. I first heard of this movie about a year ago and was excited! A few months later, I received an e-mail with a preview of the movie trailer, again I was excited and touched! I tend to multi-task while watching television, but every time I see a commercial for this movie, I stop what I am doing to watch it. I am touched by the movie – and I haven’t even seen it yet! The release date is finally here! I know, this is a lot of exclamation points, but this is how excited I am!

There will be a Red Carpet Premiere at the Reading Cinemas San Diego tomorrow at 8:30pm, with a panel discussion following the conclusion of the movie. The Premiere is organized by the United Farm Workers (UFW) Foundation and includes a VIP reception at Stingaree Night Club at 6:00pm. The Red Carpet will include a number of special guests, such as actor Jacob Vargas; Arturo Rodriguez, President of the United Farm Workers; members of the Chavez family, and elected officials and community leaders. Tickets are $100 VIP Reception and movie, $20 movie. Funds raised will help support the UFW Foundation and the United Farm Workers. Tickets can be purchased at: http://secure.ufw.org/page/contribute/Chavezmoviesd. There will also be Premieres hosted in Bakersfield, Fresno, Salinas, and other locations.

The movie depicts the life and struggles of Cesar Chavez, the civil rights leader and labor organizer, and his commitment to securing a living wage for farm workers. As founder of the United Farm Workers, Chavez embraced non-violence as he battled prejudice in his struggle to bring dignity to people. Chavez inspired millions of Americans from various communities, even those who were not form workers, to fight for social justice. The movie was directed by Diego Luna and stars Jacob Vargas, Michael Pena, America Ferrera, Rosario Dawson, and John Malkovich. It is rated PG-13.

You can visit www.chavezmovieseeit.com for more information and a theatre near you.

The movie will be playing in multiple theatres in the San Diego region:

-AMC Theatres: Fashion Valley, Mission Valley, Otay Ranch, Norwalk Oceanside, Palm Promenade

-Regal Theatres: Rancho del Rey, Parkway Plaza, La Jolla

-Signature Stadium Theatres: Vista, Escondido

-Century Tranforan San Diego

-Reading Cinemas Downtown Gaslamp San Diego

What do you think of this movie? Will you be seeing it? Do you relate to Cesar Chavez?

Hugs & have fun at movie,

Paola

Find of the Week: Black Booties

DSCN8466

Hi friends,

There are many things to like about the changes in season. One of them is “sales”! When seasons change, last season’s items are on sale, many at double or triple reduced price. So, this is a good time to buy winter items, particularly items that will still be in style next year.  For example, a few key pieces such as boots, black slacks or skirts, coats, cardigans, tights, you get the idea. I had been eyeing a pair of black leather booties and on a recent visit to the Nine West Outlet store, these were on sale. At $49.99, it was a sale that was just too good to pass up on! There were many pairs on the shelves – and they are also  available in brown and gray. I wore them a few days ago and may wear them this week since the weather has been a bit chilly. In addition to being beautiful, these are surprisingly quite comfortable! I have multiple pairs of Nine West shoes and the quality lasts forever, so I know I will be enjoying wearing these for a few years to come! Happy shopping friends!

Do you have booties? In what color?

Hugs,

Paola

Closing Night Party: SDLFF

DSCN8848

Hi friends,

The San Diego Latino Film Festival had it’s Closing Night Party last night. I hadn’t been to the Closing Night Party in a few years and was glad to attend last night. We had a blast! This party was different from other Film Festival parties, it included individual musical performers, a band that  performed Mexican regional music, dancing, and even a fashion show. There was also a silent auction, food, and tequila tasting stations. The red carpet was rolled out to greet guests at the Broadway Pier Event Center, on the bay in downtown San Diego.

I sat with friends and met some new friends! We mixed and mingled, and best of all I got to catch up with a friend I hadn’t seen in a while. Overall it was a fun night! It is all about the company you are with….and I always have fun with friends!

Here are some pictures from last night’s Party! Hope you enjoy them.

Did you attend the San Diego Latino Film Festival? Were you at the party? What did you think? Share pics!

Paola

edith interview

Hi friends, it’s Friday, yay! I was looking forward to attending the San Diego Latino Film Festival today, to meet viewers at the station’s booth. I also had the opportunity to interview one of Mexico’s most famous actresses, Edith Gonzalez. I remember seeing her in novelas when I was a teenager. She also does theatre performances and films. The organizers told me Edith will be at the Festival tomorrow and Sunday, promoting the film Deseo. She was nice and gracious, just as beautiful in person as she looks on the screen.

Afterwards, we were able to catch a movie! We saw No Se Si Cortarme Las Venas O Dejarmelas Largas, a film from Mexico, with actress Ludwika Paletal (also a famous novela actress). It was fantastic, a comedy with a good story line! If you want to get a laugh and see an entertaining movie, this is a good one!

There are two days left for the Festival. Don’t miss this opportunity to watch the best movies from Latin America, Spain, & Mexico, and attend the closing night party tomorrow! Hope to see you there!

Hugs,

Paola

Paola
