Holidays: The Joy of Having a Day Off

DSCN6401

Hi friends,

Hope you had a nice Martin Luther King Jr’s Birthday holiday weekend! It was a holiday I  was looking forward to because we (the stations where I work) sponsored the YMCA’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Human Dignity Awards Breakfast. It is a wonderful event, with more than 1,200 attendees and the speakers are always moving. On Sunday, my hubby and I were working on what I call our “if the world comes to an end” backpacks (more on this in a later post). He refers to it as our “emergency” packages.  We had been out and about at Home Depot and The Container Store buying items we needed  (I snuck in some quick shopping at Macy’s while my hubby shopped at The Container Store). That afternoon, we were assembling some racks when I realized the next day was a holiday and I did not have to go to work! All of  sudden, I had  a huge smile and feeling of excitement. Don’t take me wrong, I like my job, I am one of those people that really likes my career and job. But, I also enjoy holidays! My feeling of excitement made me wonder why we like holidays so much (apart from the obvious of not having to go to work) and how the federal holidays got started. Have you ever wondered about this?

So, I started to do some research. Before I share the facts about holidays, I’ll share my thoughts. We all work so much and it seems now more than ever before, we are all doing more at work with less people. So, when we have the opportunity to take a day off because it is a holiday, we cherish & enjoy it!  Some holidays also have special events tied to them, which we look forward to, such as family time on Christmas Day and Thanksgiving, fireworks on the Fourth of July, barbecues, parades, time with family and friends, and many more reasons. Some of us also look forward to a day to relax or to completing a project at home. My hubby and I often plan weekend getaways on holidays (except Christmas Day or Thanksgiving, those are spent with family). So, for me, that is another reason why I look forward to holidays, it is a long weekend and we get to travel – we both enjoy that! They say that having events or plans you are looking forward to, such as a trip or party, adds to your happiness in life! I agree!

This past holiday weekend we had things to do, so we stayed in town, but we did manage to go to Mexicali to visit my mom, grandmother, and aunt on Monday! It was a quick day trip and I really enjoyed spending time with them! Plus, road trips with my hubby are always fun. He always has interesting stories to share and we never seem to run out of things to talk about. It is one-on-one time, which I cherish! Our good conversations, are one of the reasons why I fell in love with him!

What is your favorite holiday? Do you have traditions you follow on holidays – such as time with family, barbecues, playing board games, going to the beach, visiting family out of town?

If you are interested on the facts about how federal holidays got started – here’s my abbreviated version (source Congressional Research Service). The first federal holidays were established by law in 1870. It started with Congress passing five holidays: New Year’s Day, George Washington’s Birthday, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. These holidays were first granted as paid time off only for federal employees in the District of Columbia. In 1885, Congress extended some of the holidays to all federal employees. According to the information I found, the whole suggestion to start federal holidays came in response to a memo drafted by local bankers and business men. Currently, there are eleven permanent federal holidays established by law. To learn more about federal holidays, how they get created, and the list of the eleven federal holidays, see the link to the document I listed above.

Even now, federal holidays are legally only applicable for federal employees. I knew this because it came up in a conversation years ago. I mentioned it to friends and colleagues recently, some thought legally their employer had to give them those days off (even though they don’t work for the federal government). I explained that they were actually paid holidays for federal employees.

Did you know that federal holidays were not legally applicable for non-federal employees?

The next holiday I get off is Memorial Day at the end of May…looking forward to it. Which is the next holiday you get off?

Below are some pictures from past holidays, hope you like them! Share your holiday pictures!

Paola

Week in Photos

Hi friends,

Hope you are enjoying the MLK holiday weekend (a looong weekend)! This past week was busy….as usual, but also fun. The Quinceanera Expo is coming up and I was asked to be the emcee again. I am looking forward to the event and this week went to Aurora’s Bridal for the dress fitting. I will be working with Aurora, dress designer and boutique owner, on the dress I will wear for the event. The stations sponsored the YMCA’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Human Dignity Awards Breakfast and I attended, it was  an inspiring and wonderful event!

This week, my sister was still on break from school (she is a teacher), so I visited her and my nephews after work one night and we all went for a walk to get some exercise (the boys were on push carts/car toy strollers). After our walk, I played with my nephews and enjoyed a delicious dinner sister made. It is such a treat to see them on a weeknight!

My hubby, Jim, had a cold the week my nephew, Joel, was born, so he wasn’t able to meet him. This week he was finally able to join me for a visit to my brother’s home and met the baby!

This week, I found some healthy snacks – ready to eat fresh pico de gallo cups – with jicama, cucumber, & orange. On Thursday, I went to a Zumba class with a new instructor and enjoyed the class! I will definitely be back to that class. It is the little things in life, like this, that bring me joy, ha!

Hope you continue to enjoy the weekend & holiday!

How was your week? What are your plans for the weekend? Are you going to the MLK Parade in downtown San Diego on Sunday or in your town?

Hugs,

Paola

Tricks to Motivate Myself to Exercise: Trick #4

Trick #4: Exercise at Gym Close to Work or Home

996957_10200728908773212_1305954010_n

Going to a gym that is located close to work or home really works for me! It is convenient and practical. I am a member of 24Hour Fitness, I have been for about 10 years! The membership I have is for multiple locations, pretty much all their gyms in various cities. I usually go to the gym after work and take the classes. I know the schedules for the fitness classes at the gyms close to work and don’t always make it for the entire hour, but know that it is better to exercise for forty-five or thirty minutes, than to not exercise at all. Another option is to use the equipment to exercise, such as a treadmill, elliptical, or bicycle. An item that helps me pass the time when I exercise on equipment is a magazine, book, or my IPod. I always have a magazine in my car and my IPod in my purse. Before I know it, I’ve gotten at least 30 minutes of cardio and walked two miles!

Every once in a while I’ll go to the gym located about two miles from the station at lunch time and walk on a treadmill for thirty minutes and stretch for five minutes, freshen up & change, then rush back to work. I get a pretty light work out because I don’t really want to get to sweaty since I go back to work afterwards. I try to go to the gym at lunch time at least one or two times per week, particularly if I know I will not be able to exercise that evening. Exercising regularly at lunch time can be challenging for me because sometimes I have shoots or meetings at lunch time, but mostly because I often work through lunch time (which is not good, but such is life).

On weekends, I’ll try to go to gyms close to home. I’ll take a class or use the equipment. My husband also has a membership to 24Hour Fitness and it helps (me) when I can motivate him to go to the gym with me, somehow it also motivates me to know he is going with me. Every once in a while, I’ll go to the gym close to home on weekday mornings, but the classes offered are at 5:00 am, which is usually about an hour too early for me. Sometimes, I’ll go to the gym in the mornings and just get on the treadmill or elliptical for a quick workout. When I do make it to the gym in the mornings, I feel great the rest of the day, full of energy! Exercising in the mornings is also good for your metabolism, more on that in another post.

Do you have a gym membership? Which gym do you go to? Do you have a favorite class you take or do you use the equipment? Do you go to the gym in the mornings, lunch time, or evenings?

In the picture above, I was stretching after exercising on the treadmill at the gym.

582228_3240051288278_2068416036_n

When I want to get in some light exercise, I use the bicycles. It is simple and I can read while I get a workout (or catch up with  friend on the phone), which helps the time go by faster. Before I know it, I will have gone a few miles on the bicycle and gotten thirty minutes of exercise.

920731_4502050717475_1460463408_o

I keep print outs of the exercise class schedules from the gyms located close to work and home handy, so I can quickly see which class I can attend on a certain day. I keep them in a cabinet at work, in the glove compartment of my car, and the nightstand in my bedroom at home.

Changing It Up: Blue Nail Polish

DSCN7406

Current trends in nail polishes include different colors, glitter, patterns, stickers, and even art on your nails. I have seen blue nail polish on my sister’s nails, as well as women around town and thought it looked wonderful on them….but it was maybe not my style, just not for me. I had never worn blue nail polish….at least not that I can remember. Maybe I had used light blue or turquoise polish as a teenager, but not this bright rich blue. I usually wear polishes in bright red, dark brick red (most common color worn this past year), natural colors, pinks, or a french manicure.

I usually do my manicure (with gel nail polish & the UV lamp) at home about every three weeks – I try to stretch it as long as I can. I love gel nail polish (more of that in another post)! Every few months, I will go get a professional manicure and this time decided to change things up a bit, to be adventurous, ha! An easy way to change things up is to change your nail color, so I selected blue because it is a color I did not have at home and had never tried before. I got so many compliments! The nail polish only lasted about a week before it started chipping (I did not get a gel manicure at the salon), but I liked the color so much that I decided to buy  blue polish. I went to Target and there were a number of options in blue tones from multiple brands. I opted for this Wet n Wild polish (Saved by the Blue) because it was the one that most closely matched the color I had on my manicure from the salon. Plus, it was only $2, so I wasn’t making a big investment here (gel polishes are about $18 each, but last for about a year or more) – also bought a Sally Hansen clear top coat nail polish (which I applied).  I have gotten so many compliments on my nails, from colleagues at work, friends, my sister & nieces of course, random people on the street, and cashiers at stores. I get a few compliments on my red polishes or when I wear a french manicure, but the compliments on the blue polish have been many.

So, if you want to try something different or something that is the latest trend, just change your nail polish color. It is simple and inexpensive. Even if you don’t think a certain color is your style, as I did with blue, just try it!  After all, changing your nail color is a short commitment because you can easily remove it after a few days if you change your mind, ha! Maybe I will try gold next! I also have my eye on a lilac color!

Have you tried blue nail polish or any of the latest trends in nails? Do you use regular nail polish or gel? Which do you prefer? Do you get your nail polish done at a salon or do you do it yourself at home? What is your favorite nail polish color? I am curious, do share your comments!

Hugs,

Paola

My Week In Photos: Start of January

Hi friends! The holidays have past and I am back in full gear at work! I had already started planning the stations’ community outreach projects for 2014 last year and the first week of January was busy with interviews, lots of meetings and production work, as well as scheduling. I am looking forward to the projects we are going to work on – they involve lots of support for the local community & San Diegans, so excited!

The highlight of my week was the birth of my nephew, Joel! He is a cutie! My brothers family did not live in San Diego when my sister-in-law was pregnant with my nieces, so I did not get to see her pass through the stages of pregnancy. It was wonderful to see her body change as the baby grew and to see the baby development in the ultrasounds! This baby is such a blessing! The entire family was excited and we were anticipating the birth with much joy! The baby was born on a Friday afternoon and the lobby area at the hospital started filling up fast as we all headed to see my sister-in-law and meet the baby! We had to take turns to enter the room, you could tell we are a big Mexican family, ha (it’s wonderful)! I have been spending more time (more than usual) with family these past few weeks, to offer support with the new baby & my nieces, as well as visiting my sister and nephews before they all go back to school (my sis is a teacher). My sister-in-law sends me messages with pics of the baby, so cute, they brighten my day! I look forward to seeing Joel grow up & to loving him!

Hope your first week of January was good! What have you been up to? Any exciting plans for January…or 2014? Do share!

Hugs,

Paola

Trick #3: Find a Workout Class You Like

yoga stretch july 82013

Exercise classes are a wonderful and fun way to exercise! I go to a few 24 Hour Fitness gyms, either close to work or home. I periodically print out the class schedules and highlight my favorite classes: Zumba & Yoga. I keep them in a special red folder in a file cabinet at my desk at work and in the glove compartment of my car. This may seem a bit much, but hey, it works for me. I have so much on my mind, it helps to have the schedules handy when I want to look up a class to attend. I also add the classes that I am most likely to attend on my Outlook electronic schedule (I easily have access to the schedule from my cel phone). I add classes that are held on weekday evenings for the gyms close to work. I add a few options because I don’t always leave work at the same time, if I miss the first evening class, I know an hour later there is another class available. I add classes held on weekend for the gyms which are close to home. It helps me remember the times and locations the classes are held at.

Attending classes I like makes it fun to exercise. I know with Zumba, I will dance and enjoy the music! I’ll break a sweat, get lots of cardio, and always leave with a smile and feeling great! With yoga, I know I will stretch and balance, and always leave feeling relaxed. I’ve also become familiar with some of the instructors and have my favorite classes.

Do you have any favorite classes you attend?

Hugs,

Paola

Paola

Tricks to Motivate Myself to Exercise: Trick #2

Hi friends – this is Trick #2 of the series: Tricks to Motivate Myself to Exercise

Trick #2: Change into Exercise Clothes at Work

I always have my gym bag in the car. If I plan to exercise after work, I will take my gym bag out of the car with me when I arrive at the station in the morning. This way, when I am done with work, I’ll change at the restrooms at the television station before I leave work. If I am in exercise clothes, I feel motivated and prepared to exercise (ok, sometimes it is more like forced to go exercise ;)). It is like changing from my “work uniform” (outfit) to my “exercise uniform.” Make sense? A few times, I have said, “oh, I’ll change at the gym or go to the store first, then the gym and change there”….and you know what happens, I don’t go to the gym. Somehow between leaving the station parking lot and getting on the freeway I decide to pass the freeway off ramp for the gym and keep driving straight home (and don’t exercise that day). But, when I am wearing my exercise clothes, I go straight to the gym. Maybe it is a state of mind, but putting on the exercise clothes automatically motivates me to exercise. Then, when I arrive at the gym, I start exercising (usually Zumba), get my endorphins going, and leave feeling happy and wonderful!

Do you have a gym bag? Do you change at work to head straight to exercise after work?

Tip: I have multiple of exercise outfits (pants, tops, and jackets) , a few pairs of tennis shoes, and many socks. This way, I always have exercise clothes and socks available in my drawers, making it easy to pack my gym bag daily. I use one pair of tennis shoes as my “gym bag” tennis shoes, this way I don’t need to be taking them out of the gym bag in the car when I need tennis shoes while at home or if I decide to exercise on the weekends.

If you would like to read the post regarding Tip #1, click here.

Tricks to Motivate Myself to Exercise : Trick #1

Hi friends,

Hope you had a nice weekend! The New Year has started and one of the most common new year’s resolutions people make is to exercise more and/or lose weight. If you follow my blog, you know I like to exercise, but I have to motivate myself to exercise. I don’t have a huge urge to exercise, but always feel better after I do it. I often wish I was like those people who wake up in the mornings with a huge urge and motivation to go for a jog, but I am just simply not like that. But, if I don’t exercise for  a few days, I do feel the urge and need to exercise, at least go for a long walk! I sometimes have to trick myself into exercising. By trick, I mean I use different techniques to motivate myself to exercise. I exercise mostly to be healthy, it is also a  good stress reliever for me, and of course, helps me stay in shape and fit into my jeans (always a plus)! I also love chocolate and certain snacks, exercising allows me to treat myself every one in a while and not have to deprive myself of my favorite foods.

I am going to write a series of 10 Tricks I Use to Motivate Myself to Exercise. I will list them in the order in which I enjoy them most and do them most often. Hope you enjoy reading about these and how they work for me….and if you need extra motivation to exercise, hopefully these will work for you too!

Do you have any tricks you use to motivate yourself to exercise? What are they?

Was exercising more often one of your New Year’s Resolutions?

Hugs,

Paola

Trick #1: Have an Exercise Buddy

lola paola exercise bay

My exercise buddy is my bff Lola. One of the first blog posts I wrote was about the positive things related to having an exercise buddy. As we get older and have more responsibilities (such as a full-time job, spouse to spend time with, dinner to make, errands to run, a house to clean, kids, pets, etc., etc.) we have less time to spend with friends. Spending time with friends brings happiness and a sense of belonging to our lives! On the days I exercise with Lola, I look forward to the end of the workday and to seeing her because I know I will enjoy my time with her. We usually exercise after work, we set a date ahead of time and stick to it (but if an urgent matters comes up and we need to change the date the other understands).  Or main form of exercise is going for long speed walks by the bay downtown. We meet at Lola’s home and go for a long walk. During our walks, we talk about everything, we catch up on our lives! We laugh and we confide in each other. I never get bored of walking the same route (even though we do change it up every once in a while), because I am having fun with my friend! We call it our therapy. We laugh, we talk, and we walk! Sometimes, I may be having a very stressful day at work, but once I get to Lola’s home, I immediately de-stress, I can vent with her about my day or not even bring it up because once I get there we have some many other good things to talk about that I am able to leave the stress of my day behind.

Having an exercise buddy is a good way to motivate oneself to exercise!  If you know someone is waiting for you, so you can exercise together, you are more likely to show up and exercise. Plus, if your exercise buddy is a good friend you enjoy spending time with, you know you will have a good time and it will be fun! So, you have so much fun that before you realize it, you have already walked a few miles and gotten a good workout! Exercising with a friend is not only good for your body, it is also good for your soul!

Favorite Outfit of the Season

 DSCN6979

Hi friends! Do you have a favorite outfit this season? Mine is this red jacket from Arden B. I bought it before the winter season began and have worn it many times this holiday season! It is warm, comfortable, and can be worn open or closed. I like it so much that I have worn it for work, casual outings, and on recent trips to San Francisco and Newport Beach (these pics were taken at South Coast Plaza in Newport). It was practical for traveling because it did not get wrinkled in my carry-on bag, always a plus. It can be dressed up with a skirt (or dress) and heels, or worn with jeans and boots – as I wear it here! I also purchased the jacket in a camel color, but have only worn that one twice. We have a few weeks of chilly weather left in Southern California (ok, our version of chilly weather), so I will try to wear this red jacket a few more times….I’ll stretch the season out and continue wearing the jacket as long as I can! I get compliments every time I wear it, which is always nice. Most importantly, I feel great…confident and stylish every time I wear it, you can’t beat that! For all these reasons, this is my favorite outfit of the season!

Which is your favorite outfit of the season?

Hugs,

Paola

PS – I wore my hair up to accentuate the high collar & ruffles the jacket has. I also applied red lipstick, this is my favorite Chanel tone for the season (a gift from my comadre Marissa, comadre = mother of my goddaughter).

My Week in Photos – Last Days of the Year

Hi friends, hope you are having a nice holiday season! I worked through the Christmas holiday, but did take Christmas day off and we went out of town to spend Christmas Eve and day with family! I was back to work December 26. We hadn’t been to San Francisco for a few months, so I took a few days off during the last week of December to go to San Fran with my hubby. We were back in town for New Year’s Eve, to welcome the new year with family!

The weeks before Christmas were packed with work, hosting interviews, writing scripts, production, planning for 2014, a phone bank for the Month of a Million meals campaign, completing goals…oh and a visit from a very famous Mouse & his friend Donald Duck….and this was just at work. In my personal life, it was the normal holiday busyness, shopping for gifts, preparing for Christmas, and the pleasant side – spending time with family and friends! It was a packed few weeks, but tons of fun!!! How did you prepare for the holidays?

Hugs,

Paola

One of the favorite (& most fun) parts of my job is hosting interviews – particularly when my friends from Disneyland come to the stations! They were doing a media tour regarding the Holidays at Disneyland Resort. This was the Hispanic marketing team – I hosted & produced the interview for Azteca. This year Mariachi Divas joined the holiday team, it was a special treat to meet these Grammy Award winning musicians!  Donald Duck danced to the holiday music performed by Mariachi Divas!  So cute, an unforgettable moment 🙂

New Year’s Resolutions – Do You Make Them?

fourth of july 2013 firewor 2 red

Hi friends, it’s a new year! Yup, 2014 has begun! Can you believe it? It seems 2013 flew by….yet, I can remember many good things about the year! There were challenges too – I mean bad/hard times, but I try to stay positive, so I call them “challenges” ;). I try to learn from challenges, to find something positive in them or a learning experience. Overall, 2013 was a very good year! I have many blessings to be thankful for, most important are the well-being of my family, friends, a wonderful husband and the home we form, my health, and a rewarding career.

My grandmother uses a saying,”Every problem has a solution, as long as you are alive and healthy, there is a solution!”  I try to apply that as much as possible and it helps – and is very true. So, I feel very, very blessed and fortunate, regardless of the challenges life brings, we always find a solution. In 2013, the hardest moment for me was losing my Uncle Abel. I wrote about his passing in my blog and am dealing with getting used to living without his presence in our family. I say “getting used to living without his presence” because I don’t think I will ever overcome his death, as many of us never get over the death of a loved one. So, having said that, this was the only challenge in the year I could not find a solution for. Everything else, we fixed, got over or moved forward from, learned from it and it made us stronger or wiser….and many of these things seem unimportant today.

These past few days, I’ve been reflecting on the year…..the year that just passed and the year to come. I used to write New Year’s Resolutions, but haven’t done that in a while. I do have goals and plans, I write some of them down, but I do this at multiple times of the year, not just on New Year’s Day.

I did a little research and learned that New Year’s Resolutions have been around since the times of the Romans, they would begin their year making promises to the god Janus, for whom January is named. The tradition has continued and many people still write them every year. These resolutions are usually goals, plans, or acts of self-improvement (I almost always have a resolution to lose those last 5 pounds, ha)  beginning the new year.

My resolutions this year include:

– Call my mom & grandmother more often (they are in my thoughts & prayers daily, but I want to call them more often)

– Spend more time with close friends (life has many demands on our time, but my close friends are like family to me)

– Exercise more often (I’ve been slacking the past few months)

– Eat healthier (I eat pretty healthy, but can improve)

– Read more (a hobby I enjoy & learn from -I read non-fiction- but have spent less time doing lately)

– Spend more time on my blog – add posts more often (I am enjoying the blog & the interaction with you, it has become a nice community & am glad you are also enjoying it, thanks for your comments, it warms my heart when I meet people and they tell me they read the blog! Thank you!)

– Learn to edit video & photos (I have wanted to learn to edit video for the past year, but have prioritized other projects at work, this year I need to learn it and will make it a priority)

-Improve my skills in social media and learn about the latest marketing trends (I believe in self-improvement and continuos growth, I’m always trying to find ways and get feedback from colleagues on how to improve my work, be it my on-camera skills, the projects I work on, producing, managing, marketing, etc…there is always room for growth)

I have another personal resolutions and will share it if….when it comes true.

Best wishes to all of you and God bless! May 2014 bring you everything you want, health, happiness, success, and many, many blessings!

Do you write New Year’s Resolutions? What are they, share in the comments!

Hugs & Happy New Year,

Paola

Find of the Week: Sonicare

 DSCN6796

My teeth are important to me. Not just the appearance of my teeth, but the health of my mouth. I will need my teeth the rest of my life, so I try to take care of them. One of the products that I use to keep my teeth healthy is my Sonicare toothbrush. I have had a Sonicare toothbrush for about 15 years. I remember buying my first Sonicare for about $100 at Costco. Every few months I would change the brush head. That one lasted about 10 years, until I took it on a long trip to Europe and busted it by using the wrong converter for the charger. The charge lasts about 10 days, so the other times I had taken it on trips abroad I wouldn’t take the charger because I didn’t need it. If I was on a trip for more than ten days, I would use it as a manual toothbrush on the last days. After the trip where I busted the toothbrush charger, I did some research regarding prices and bought another one at Bed Bath & Beyond for about $90 (I used the store’s 20% off coupon). Believe it or not, a few years later, while on my honeymoon in Europe, I busted it again with the converter. I remember hearing a small blasting sound in the hotel room after the brush had been plugged in for about an hour, the next day my toothbrush wasn’t working. So, I bought another one, this time at Target, for about $75 or so (with mail-in-rebate offer). I preferred the first one I bought because it did a vibration motion which notified me when it was time to move to my other arch of teeth. The one I currently have does not have a vibration motion notification, but it does stop brushing after 2 minutes, which is the recommended time to brush your teeth. Needless to say, I have not taken my charger with me in the past trips we have made abroad. I plan to keep this toothbrush for a long time!

You may be asking yourself why I keep buying it over and over again. First of all the quality is excellent, I had the first one for about 10 years! It still worked perfectly. The handle had turned slightly off-white, but mechanically it was fine. I would probably still be using it if I hadn’t charged it improperly in Europe. I like this toothbrush because in addition to seeing the difference in my teeth, I feel it in my mouth. My breath is fresher in the morning when I use this to toothbrush. To avoid traveling with the toothbrush’s case, which is a bit bulky, I occasionally use a manual toothbrush on weekend trips. I can feel the difference on my teeth and in my breath when I wake up when I use a manual toothbrush.

According to usa.philips.com, the Sonicare toothbrush has three engineering innovations: Sonic technology drives bristle tip velocity, clinically proven results, and dynamic clean action for  clean feel. It delivers more strokes in two minutes, than a manual toothbrush can in one month. It also removes up to seven times more plaque, resulting in a cleaner and healthier smile. It has soft bristles, a powerful clean, gently massages the gums which stimulates blood circulation and helps dislodge plaque.

It is true – the bristles are soft and my mouth feels really clean after I use the toothbrush. I have had less plaque and a healthier smile!

I decided to write this post because the Sonicare toothbrush is one of my favorite products – and it is on sale tomorrow and Saturday at Macy’s. When I saw the ad for the toothbrush, I started to think about who I could buy it for as a Christmas gift! It is that good of a deal. It is on sale December 20 & 21, before 1:00pm, for $39.99. That is the lowest price I have ever seen it at. It is regularly $199.99 and will be $79.99 after 1:00pm. So, if you want to buy a gift for yourself – get this toothbrush, your smile will appreciate it! Even though $40 may seem high for a toothbrush, if you buy four or six manual toothbrushes per year, you are already spending about $40 per year. If taken care of properly, a Sonicare toothbrush can last you for years, you only need to buy the brush heads and clean the base occasionally. I buy my replacement toothbrush heads at Target for about $25 for two. If you brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time, the brush head should be changed about every three months. The heads have a color indicator that let you know when it is time to change them.

If you miss the Macy’s sale, you can also find it on sale at Bed Bath & Beyond, a set of two Sonicare toothbrushes is $129.99. So, you could give it as a gift to your spouse or another family member….and for yourself at the same time!

Do you have a favorite toothbrush? If you buy a Sonicare, let me know what you think.

Hugs….and happy brushing,

Paola

How a Movie Can Help You De-stress

DSCN5651

I used to consider watching movies one of my hobbies. I loved watching movies…actually, I still do, but now I don’t seem to have time to watch too many DVD movies at home. When I was single, I used to look forward to the day my Netflix movie would arrive and sometimes, I would watch the movie that same night, even if it was a weeknight. When I got married, my husband also had a Netflix account, so we cancelled one of them. About a year later, we changed the membership to cancel the movie deliveries and now only have the on-line option because we no longer watch DVD movies at home that often. I like the option of having movies available on-line, so we have kept that membership.

Movies are a good and simple form of entertainment! They can also be educational or there is a positive message you can take from them! You can get lost in a movie, cry, laugh, and sometimes just “feel good” after watching a movie. Even though, I no longer watch too many DVD movies at home, I enjoy going to the movies and still make it to the theatre about once a month to see a movie. Every once in a while I go to the movies with my hubby, nephews, or sister – but not very often. My movie buddy is Lola, my bestie. This has become a fun outing for us. An outing that I look forward to because I can combine time with my friend, I know I am going to laugh and have a nice time! We both have busy lives, so we schedule the movie night about a week or two ahead of time. I literally put it on my Outlook calendar and send her an appointment invitation.  She is usually out of town on weekends and I work at events on many weekends, so we tend to go to the movies on weekdays, which is nice because the theaters are not packed. Sometimes, we meet at the theatre, others at her home and walk about a mile to the theatre downtown in order to get a little exercise. Other times, we’ll meet at the mall and go shopping before the movie. These movie outings with Lola give me something to look forward to, not only that I will watch a movie, but also that I get to catch up with my friend! I always, always have fun and leave feeling happy afterwards! Doing things I enjoy and spending time with close friends, helps me de-stress, it makes me feel like I am dedicating some time to myself, to my welll-being, and happiness – and this makes me a better person, wife, and employee! They say having outings or events to look froward to helps us increase our happiness! Well, it is true for me!

So, next time you have an opportunity to go catch a movie with a friend, do it! I know sometimes it may seem hard to make time for ourselves and we may tend to place others’ needs before ours. I can relate, even though I do not have children yet, I do have many responsibilities that fill my schedule. You will not only enjoy the movie, you’ll also enjoy time with your friend and that will enrich your life!

When was the last time you went to the movies with a friend?

Hugs,

Paola

Pictured above are Lola and I at the movie theatre, we went shopping, then caught a movie. It was a weeknight, that is why I was still wearing my work attire, she had changed into a casual outfit.

I recently went to see The Hunger Games: Catching Fire with my sister. We went on a Saturday, after I had worked at an event for about five hours. Even though I knew it would be a long day and I would be tired, I went to the movies with my sister that night because I knew I would enjoy the time with her, plus I was looking forward to seeing that movie, it’s great!

DSCN4007 DSCN4010

This summer, we went to see the Flight of the Butterflies movie at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center’s Imax Theater. It was a fun outing with my sis, sister-in-law, and nephews/nieces! The movie is interesting, educational, and has beautiful scenes!

DSCN3754DSCN3758DSCN3756 Over the summer, my hubby and I  took my nephew to see Disney’s Planes movie. This required coordinating four schedules, my husband’s, sister’s, nephews, and mine, we scheduled it about two weeks ahead of time. This is an outing I was definitely looking forward to! Look at that adorable smiling face! Moments with my nephew are priceless for me! He goes to the movies with his parents often, but it touched my heart when my sister told me he still talks about the day we took him to see that movie! Too cute!

How a Ringing Bell Can Make a Difference

1382127_10200746906583146_424672_n

I was honored to be included in Giving Back Magazine’s November Issue which featured Community Leaders regarding how they were going to “give back” to local charities these holidays. I included the Salvation Army in my portion of the article because I have been volunteering with them for more than six years. I have seen first hand how they help thousands of San Diegans every year. As a member of their Public Relations Board for the San Diego & Imperial Counties Chapter, I have seen how they impact people’s lives, not only during emergencies and disasters around the world, but also locally. They have thrift stores which in addition to raising funds for their programs, also provide jobs, they also have camp programs for youth, the Kroc Center for children and families, they have a rehabilitation center, senior centers, food distribution services, a shelter home for women, and many more programs. They are rated as one of the best charities in regards to the percentage of funds that actually go to the charity and not administration or salaries. If I recall correctly, about 90% of every donation goes directly to the programs to help others, to the charity directly, that is amazing!

This holiday season, I supported the Salvation Army by producing and hosting two interview for them regarding their Holiday Fundraising Campaign and Toy Drive. I also volunteered as a bell ringer on the All Star Bell Ringing Day. We had fun! I was located at a Walmart in Santee, along with three other local celebrities – the Fox San Diego Sports Girls and the Chick-Fil-A Cow, and Lynn from the Salvation Army. My toes were freezing at the end of the night, but it was worth it! It was nice to see so many people donate to the red kettle, every little helps, some people donated ten, five, one dollar…or coins. They searched in their pockets for change and donated it. It was nice to see parents teaching their children to donate by allowing their children to be the one’s to place the money in the kettle and telling them that it was to help families in need. It also warmed my heart to hear stories from people which had been helped by the Salvation Army locally. So, next time you hear a bell ringer, hopefully you will donate in the red kettle, every little helps. If you’d like to support the Salvation Army , you can donate on-line at their site and also sign-up to be a bell-ringer, here’s the link. I’ve enjoyed volunteering with them, it is very satisfying!

Merry Christmas!

Do you volunteer with any charities?

Hugs,

Paola

My Week In Photos – November

azteca en la comunidad studio iterview set MMM 1 paola liz landa barbara jimenez nov 8 2013

November was a very busy month! I am usually quite busy, but during November we launched a new holiday initiative called Month of a Million Meals at the television stations where I work. I am managing the initiative, it is a large undertaking, starting the campaign from scratch and working with Feeding America San Diego to raise one million meals for local families in need. It has been a true pleasure to work with the Feeding America San Diego staff and to be part of such a good cause! This campaign was huge because it involved multiple facets, promotion on various platforms, a Holiday Celebration Event at Westfield Plaza Bonita and working with multiple departments within the stations, in addition to the external partners and cross-promotion with other media. We started from scratch, from developing the plan, the promotion, the logo, landing pages, promo spots and scripts, to working with the station anchors and reporters (as well as a national TV host & the Azteca America Network reps), and of course, translating everything to Spanish for the Azteca station….and much more! I am glad to say the campaign has been successful! We rolled out the campaign a few days early and even though it has been many, many hours of working late, it has been worth it because we will help so many families! We still have a few more weeks to go, the phone bank this coming week and some more production and web postings, but we are doing well! In addition to the campaign, I had my regular projects and television hosting responsibilities to complete, and planning for 2014, so there was lots going on during November!  Anyway, this is the reason, I have not been as active on my blog as usual, but I seem to be getting back to my normal work schedule, so I plan to post on a regular basis again! Thank you for your patience & support!

Instead of doing a “Week in Photos” post, this is “the last weeks of November.” Have you worked on any large projects that have consumed your time and required you to work longer hours?

Hugs,

Paola

The picture posted above is from the first Month of a Million Meals interview I hosted on Azteca San Diego (I also produce these interviews – for both ABC10 & Azteca San Diego). In total, we produced eight interviews for the campaign over a six week period….compared to the two interviews we usually do for station sponsored events – you can see why this is such a large campaign!
